Welcome to FOOPS!

The Friends of Overstone Primary School (FOOPS) is a charity run by parent and guardian volunteers.  As a parent of a child at Overstone Primary School you are automatically a member of the PTA and as such you can attend meetings, vote on proposals and make suggestions for spending or raising funds.  We welcome new members and fresh ideas so please get in touch.

WE REALLY DO NEED YOUR SUPPORT!

Role of the Committee

Committee

A very small number of parents make up the actual Committee, backed up by a great deal of support from other parents in school! Our PTA Committee consists of the following Officers:

  • Chair – Sally-Ann Timperley
  • Vice Chair – Sally Agutter
  • Treasurer – Julie Westland
  • Secretary – Claire Howe and Helen Barber

We also have approximately eight ordinary Committee members to make up the full Committee. The Committee meet on a regular basis before events with smaller working groups meeting as necessary when we are planning larger events. An extra pair of hands is always welcome no matter how little time you can spare. Please come along to any of our meetings to hear more.

‘Friends’ of FOOPS.

We have a growing list of PTA volunteers who commit some of their time to helping the Committee. There are many ways you can help and support your child through FOOPS. Donations of time, money, items for sale, donations for raffles or offers of services and skills are all helpful.

Meetings

Annual General Meeting (AGM)

We hold our Annual General Meeting at the beginning of the academic year to report on the previous year’s work and elect the new Committee members. This is a meeting for all members of the PTA, not just the elected Committee members. It is our chance to tell you about our achievements and the difference we have made. We need the support of parents so that decisions taken at the AGM are valid and in line with our constitution. It also provides an opportunity to hear in more detail about the funds we have raised and how the money has been spent. It is also when we elect our new Committee members.

You can also ask questions or voice your opinions. Please support the AGM and give us your ideas for fundraising events.

Minutes

Minutes of meetings and letters are posted on the school website.

What do FOOPS do?

We raise money to spend on improving equipment and resources to enhance our children’s education and the facilities in the school in general.  We promote closer links between home and school and we bring staff, parents, pupils and friends together in support of our school.  Here is a list of all the regular activities and events we run through the year,

  • Halloween Disco
  • Christmas Fair
  • Valentine’s Disco
  • Easter Eggstravaganza
  • Mothers Day and Fathers Day
  • Rose Day
  • Sports Day
  • Leavers Disco
  • Plus a number of cake stalls and Mufti Day’s throughout the year!

How can you get involved?

There are many ways you can help and support your child through FOOPS.   Here are some ways you can get involved:

  • running stalls at after school events
  • running stalls at evening events
  • baking for events
  • helping to set up / clear up for events
  • selling tickets,
  • helping with food / drinks
  • keeping an eye out for bargains we can buy for tombola / competition prizes

Also

  • You can attend the AGM or meetings to give us ideas for fundraising events.
  • If you don’t have the time to help at events then your enthusiasm for what FOOPS are doing is really beneficial so please try to support the events.
  • If you have any contacts or skills we could use then this could be beneficial, please come along to a meeting or contact a member of FOOPs to discuss ways this could be of use.
  • If you have suggestions on what money could be spent on we’d be interested to hear your ideas.

Just one hour assisting at an event is invaluable.

We are grateful for all offers of help before events or at other times during the year – it really is a case of ‘many hands make light work’. It doesn’t matter if you can’t help on a regular basis, or even if you can only help ‘behind the scenes’. There are always jobs that can be done from home if you have half an hour to spare e.g. wrapping gifts, preparing raffle tickets etc. We really couldn’t achieve what we do without you or without the behind the scenes help that we receive. Remember, you are under no obligation to give more time than you can spare.

If you are worried you might miss something during an event, maybe you could ‘share’ a stall (and children!) with a friend and take it in turns to help with a stall and enjoy the event. If you are interested in joining the Committee or helping as a PTA volunteer, please come and talk to a member of the Committee.

Other Fundraising Schemes …

In addition to the various events organised throughout the year by FOOPS, there are several on-going initiatives all aimed at raising more money towards equipment and activities for all the children of Overstone Primary.  Below we have provided information on various other ways you can easily help raise funds for your school.

Easyfundraising.org.uk

Calling all internet shoppers.  Why not raise money for Overstone Primary School and save some money too whilst you shop?  Simply log onto www.easyfundraising.org.uk and become a member.  All the BIG brands are there: Ebay, M&S, Argos, ToyRus, Tesco, Amazon. Every time you do your grocery shop; buy a birthday present; book your summer holidays then go via the Easy Fund-raising site and we get a percentage of the shop donated directly to the School.  Free money!

Nearly new school uniform sale

FOOPS have a stock of used uniform which is sold to raise funds for the school.

Donations of clean, outgrown uniform items are always appreciated.  Donations can be handed in at the school office marked clearly as 2nd hand uniform donations, ideally please remove name labels prior to donating.

How to Buy:  Second Hand Uniform Sales are held several times a year but you can also buy at any time throughout the year by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Recycling Mobiles

Have you got old phones knocking around the house but you don’t know what to do with them? Then please donate them to the PTA. Money will be paid out on your old phones and that money will go directly to the PTA.  So please have a look around the house or ask your friends and family for old phones.

There is a collection box at the Main Entrance for you to hand in phones.

Bags to School

A good opportunity to have a clear out of clothes and raise money!  You’ll receive a bag to fill up with unwanted clothes over a couple of weeks and then bring it into school for us to raise lots of money.

Matched Funding is a scheme which lots of employers offer, please click on the link to find out more and/or contact your HR department for details … Matched Funding.

How we spend the money we raise

Following a fundraising event the money is banked straight away. It is at our FOOPS meetings, that the decisions on how to spend the money are agreed.

Usually, Mrs Mardell will have a ‘wish list’ of items that the school and the children would like FOOPS  to consider funding.

This year it includes;

Tablets for the classrooms – FOOPS has already raised £3000 for the school to purchase Tablets so watch this space to increase the number ….!

Outdoor Storage Unit – the existing one at the front of the playground is looking rather tired and is too small for the outdoor equipment.

All money raised goes back into school in some way to benefit every child.

In the main the PTA funds are for the ‘extras’ not provided by the school budget, that make our children’s learning experiences so much more fulfilling and exciting. Decisions on how to spend the money are agreed at our PTA Committee meetings. Often Mrs Mardell will have a ‘wish list’ of items that the school would like the PTA to consider funding e.g. resources to improve a particular area of the curriculum or school environment.

Sometimes this comes from the children suggesting something, such as play equipment. Ideas also come from parents and carers. Our Constitution commits the PTA to spending money on things that will benefit the children directly. We always endeavour to spend our funds in ways that will benefit all our children across all areas of the school and curriculum. To give you more of an idea of how important PTA fundraising is to all the children at Overstone Primary School, FOOPS have funded the following:

  • Transport costs for school swimming sessions
  • Additional books for the school library
  • Contributed to costs of day trips to help bring study to life e.g. museums, outside groups coming into school to perform.
  • Gifts for our Leavers
  • Outdoor play equipment in the main playground including the playground markings, the ‘Flicky’ trail and train
  • Book tokens for the end of year Attainment Awards

Importantly, every year we help Father Christmas with some of his errands in the run up to Christmas!

The money we raise is usually spent fairly quickly. That way, you can be sure that in supporting our school, your children will feel the benefit.
